Do your Employees hate HR?

Your employees are your greatest strength. Supporting them and providing them with growth opportunities help you build a strong workforce and, ultimately, deliver your business goals.

It’s easy to overlook the benefits of having a robust Human Resources team, especially in a small/ medium-sized business. However, your HR team plays a pivotal role in employee engagement, developing the employee experience and supporting the development of your staff.

So why do HR get such a back rep?

One of the main reasons is because a lot of HR staff are untrained. They have probably been internally recruited from other areas of the business and do not have the necessary support or experience to deal with the needs of your staff.

Some employees may think that your HR Department exists to support the management team and not the staff. Perhaps they feel that HR is there to protect the company from its employees and sweep issues under the carpet rather than addressing them.

Some employees may have suffered unfair disciplinary actions for relatively minor issues. This can lead to the creation of an “us and them” culture, leaving employees feeling mistreated and hostile towards the department intended to support them.

Perhaps your employees see the HR Department as simply an extension of the Management Team, thus creating a distrust of HR and its processes. Or maybe the systems and procedures in place are antiquated and in need of updating.

So, what can you do to improve the perception of your HR team?

One of the simplest ways to improve the perception of your HR team is to have a team that actively engages with your staff. A team that supports them to achieve their goals and guides them when they have problems. Getting the right balance between protocol and “doing the right things” is essential. Empower your management and HR teams to be discretionary when dealing with minor issues and demonstrating some leniency for the overall greater good of the working environment. Not everything is black and white, so treating your employees as individuals is vital in creating a positive experience for them and a positive working culture within your company.

Make sure that you have the right people in the job. HR exists for the people within your organisation, so make sure that the HR team you hire or outsource to have people at the forefront of their minds. Only then can they create a working environment that actively supports and motivates your employees and, in the long run, create a company culture that you can be proud of.
